“The bill proposes to fix in Article 112 of the Russian Labor Code the obligation of the government of the Russian Federation when transferring days off one of them to the Monday following the Holy Resurrection, which annually falls on a Sunday”, – says the explanatory note.

As the deputies note, citing data from experts, most of the population of Russia celebrates the Orthodox religious holiday of Christ’s Resurrection.

According to one of the authors of the bill, Yaroslav Nilov, deputy leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia, granting a day off after Easter would not only demonstrate respect for the deep historical traditions of the Orthodox community in our country but would also “further evidence of recognition by the state and society of the special role of Orthodoxy in the history of Russia and in the formation and development of its spirituality and culture.

“In view of the above, the annual mandatory transfer of the day off to the nearest Monday after Easter will create additional conditions for the expression of religious feelings and meet the needs of believing citizens, freeing up time for joint activity in the circle of family, friends and acquaintances during the spring season,” says the explanatory note.

At the same time, as Nilov emphasizes, the total number of non-working holidays in the year is not increased: “We are only talking about moving one of the weekends and optimizing the calendar for the celebration of Easter Monday.”

Earlier it became known that Duma deputies from the “New People” tabled in the lower house of parliament a bill on the long weekend days from May 1 to 9 annually. At the same time it is proposed to reduce the New Year holiday week by four days.
