On Saturday afternoon, April 22, an aerial bomb was found near a house on Shalandin Street in the center of Belgorod.

“Additional information on the accident on Shalandin Street, 15. The bomb squad found an explosive object. Explosive technicians of the Russian Ministry of Defense decided to disarm it at the training ground. The operational headquarters decided to evacuate 17 apartment buildings within a radius of 200 meters. According to preliminary data, that’s more than three thousand people,” Belgorod Oblast Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov wrote in his Telegram channel.

According to him, 90 vehicles have been allocated for this purpose and all the houses from which the residents will be evacuated are taken under guard. He also added that everyone who would need help with temporary accommodation would be provided with it.

“To ensure safety, we will take people to temporary accommodation points, which have everything you need, from water to hot meals”, – stressed the head of the region.

The Mayor of Belgorod, in turn, urged the citizens to remain calm, to treat the situation with understanding and act clearly in accordance with the instructions of the employees of the administration and the police.

“People will be offered with documents and basic necessities to go to the buses at the evacuation points or temporarily move to relatives in their own cars. Hot meals, medical and psychological assistance will be organized in the TAC. If necessary, cars in parking lots that owners cannot remove will be moved to safe locations. Two tow trucks are working,” he said.

In connection with discovery of the high explosive ordnance in Belgorod the emergency response mode of regional level was introduced. This was reported by Head of the State Emergency Service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations Sergei Potapov. Referring to the assessment of explosion specialists, he stated that the detected ammunition was not explosive.

“After the evacuation measures are completed, we will lift it with a truck crane and take it to a special landfill in the Yakovlevsky urban district for destruction,” he was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.

At 15:09 Moscow time, Gladkov said in his Telegram channel that the shell was removed from the territory of the residential sector. “People are beginning to gradually return to their apartments,” he said.

On the evening of April 20, there was an explosion on one of the central streets of Belgorod, a huge crater with a radius of 20 meters was formed. According to local authorities, the blast wave knocked out windows in nearby houses, damaged cars and knocked down power poles.

The Russian Defense Ministry gave the reason for the incident.

“On April 20, 2023 around 22:15 Moscow time, while performing a flight of Su-34s of the aerospace forces over the city of Belgorod, there was an abnormal descent of an aircraft munition,” the defense ministry said in a statement.

An investigation into the incident was launched immediately afterwards. As it turned out later, three people were injured as a result of the incident, one of them refused to be hospitalized.

“One resident was diagnosed with a closed head injury, concussion. Life is not threatened, all necessary assistance is provided. And one elderly woman became ill, her blood pressure was very high. She was hospitalized and is now under medical supervision,” explained Vyacheslav Gladkov, Governor of Belgorod Oblast.

According to city authorities, ten apartments and eight cars were damaged in the explosion. The restoration work is scheduled to be completed by July.

“We will allocate money from the regional budget to overhaul the house. I hope that on Tuesday the builders will already start these works. And, of course, the main emphasis -to restore the five apartments that have suffered the most, “- said the head of the region.
